MORE H1 REVIEWS...

NOTE: These reviews are in Chinese so you are best viewing them in Chrome Browser if you need them translating. That said the translation isn't great.

Thanks to reader Juho who sent me these...

Here are some more reviews of what I assume is the Chinese model released last year.

IS THIS SOMETHING NEW XGIMI ARE WORKING ON?

Whoa! Now I could be wrong here but this looks like an image projected onto some sort of holographic projection material. The details below have the XGIMI Logo and full 4K resolution. Is this a full 4K projector from XGIMI with 3600 ansi lumens? If it is XGIMI you need to make sure it has HDCP 2.2! Where is the projector? Is it Ultra Short Throw? Very exciting!

PROJECTION AT ITS BEST AT CES FOR THE XGIMI H1

Hi there, XGIMI fans -

The results are finally in with very exciting news that both H1 and Z4 Aurora have been honored by CES: Get your XGIMI H1 using this link https://igg.me/at/h1byxgimi/x/15305890 and help me and you get an amazing projector annd some freebies too!

WATCHING 3D CONTENT ON THE XGIMI H1 - FORMATS EXPLAINED!

So you have some 3D media and want that big screen wow factor on the H1...How do I play content in 3D? Well you'll have a few options! You'll have some side by side downloads or TV broadcasts, top to bottom downloads or TV broadcasts or you'll be playing from a 3D BluRay Player using Frame Packing.

The XGIMI supports all these. Simple play the desired file or disc and choose from the 3D menu on the H1 the type of file you are using...TOP TO BOTTOM...SIDE BY SIDE...BLUE RAY (that's what the Z4 menu calls it and I assume it will be the same on the H1). Pop on your 3D glasses and voila! you now have large screen 3D!

The best way to watch any 3D is from BluRay as you get full resolution to both eyes. Top to Bottom and Side by side has already halved the resolution of the movie either vertically or horizontally so you are watching at a lower resolution. It's better than a passive 3D TV which is then halved again due to the passive retardant screen. So BluRay 3D is the way 3D is meant to be seen on a H1!
HDCP 2.2 and the XGIMI H1

HDCP 2.2 is a copy protection protocol that was added to any device that supports the playback of a 4K media signal. It is there to stop you illegally duplicating 4K films. It is not to be confused with HDMI numbering which is currently at 2.0.

Now I have found out that the XGIMI H1 does not have HDCP 2.2 compatibility and this is no surprise as like I mentioned above HDCP 2.2 is for native 4K resolution devices only. Other signals like 1080p and 720p are usually HDCP 1.4. The H1's native resolution is  1920 x 1080 so it will have HDCP 1.4. Now if you connect a sparkling new XBOX ONE S or 4K Bluray Player to the X1 what will happen? To be honest we don't know yet! It could strip the HDCP 2.2 signal (some cheap HDMi Splitters can do this). It may bring up an on screen message telling you the device is not HDCP 2.2 compliant. It may play downscaled to 1080p. Until we actually have this in our hand to test it's hard to tell.

There is a workaround though. You can get a small cheap box from here
http://www.lightinthebox.com/newest-hdcp-converter-hdmi-products-hdcp-2-2-to-hdcp-1-4-support-3d-cec-resolution-up-to-4kx2k-60hz-ycbcr-4-2-0_p4874589.html?currency=GBP&litb_from=paid_adwords_shopping&sku=444_7419&utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=cpc&adword_mt=&adword_ct=84187195634&adword_kw=&adword_pos=1o1&adword_pl=&adword_net=g&adword_tar=&adw_src_id=1810908567_301579154_21687113474_pla-214570461434&gclid=CjwKEAiApLDBBRC8oICb9NvKsg0SJAD9yOHs-aM9MeTo4fsxKhvCpECF5u_42LcV28tQkC-l4uT2yBoCGLDw_wcB

This will convert any HDCP 2.2 signal to a 1.4 signal and should still support 3D too. In the end consider you are buying a HD Projector not a 4K Projector. Yeah I know XGIMI says it supports 4K but it downscales to 1080p anyway so just play 1080p stuff. If you are lucky enough (like me) and have a 4K bluray player (mine's the Xbox One S) and want to try Deadpool in 4K get the little box!

GOT MY XGIMI X-FLOOR STAND

I took the plunge and got the stand for the H1. I found it on a UK website (see previous post).

It's nicely packaged looks very professional and well built. I can see why XGIMI saying they'll struggle to add the stand as a stretch goal as it is a heavy box. Can't wait to get the H1 now.

IS THE XGIMI H1 WORTH BACKING...JUST MY VIEW!

Based on specs alone and current pricing I'd say yes. Okay there are factors we don't know about but we can easily overcome these because XGIMI have other projectors already out there and they have great reviews regarding build quality and features.

I'm in the UK and to buy one of these pre-order is £899 from a UK store. That price is all inclusive, no VAT or DUTY to pay on top. From XGIMI it's $725 shipped but I will pay 20% in VAT to HMRC UK Customs. So £712 in total, quite a saving! This is my take on the H1 and I understand VAT and DUTY is different in other countries.

I've been into Home Theater tech for many years from VHS to LASERDIC then DVD, BLURAY and now 4K media. I've used and reviewed lots of equipment and as soon as I get the H1 in my hands I'll be doing an unboxing and in-use review.

If you'd like to back the H1 please use this link. It will enable me and you to get some freebies from XGIMI too.

STAND AND DELIVER....

This UK site are selling the stand at £118. It was at £78 but has jumped due to the poor Dollar/Pound exchange rate. It shows as out of stock but they have told me it will be back in stock by Wednesday. You will also notice that they sell other XGIMI Projectors and are taking pre-orders for the H1 at £899.

SIZE REALLY DOES MATTER...

One big question most want to know is what size can I project at with the XGIMI H1 and what distance from the screen does it need to be? Also a main factor is how versatile is the zoom option?

How a 300" projected image compares to the size of a 50" TV

Well for starters XGIMI have made it pretty easy to work out. Just add a ZERO to the feet distance. So if the H1 is 4ft from the screen, the image is 4ft + 0 = 40". The recommended largest projection size is 300" so in reverse take a ZERO off and you have 30ft from the screen.

The zoom lens on the H1 is a 1:1 ration meaning you have a +/- 10% adjustment.

30ft from screen is normally 300" image but the zoom can take this to 330" or 270". Obviously the H1 hasn't shipped yet so it will be good to see how this works in practice.

BACK A XGIMI H1 BACKER...

The beauty with crowdfunding is once a campaign reaches it's initial goal you usually get some extra perks known as stretch goals. For example the H1 team wanted $100,000 to fund this Indiegogo campaign and today they have reached the dizzy heights of $566,000. Their first stretch goal was a FREE stand adapter for all backers if they go to $400,000 and if they get to $600,000 all backers will get 2 pairs of 3D glasss. The H1 team are looking to add even more stretch goals and if you back the H1 and reffer a friend or six you can also get free stuff too.

So if you are thinking of backing the H1 campaign please use this link and help me and you get some free stuff too. And an amazing projector!

THE XGIMI H1....WHAT'S IN THE BOX?

Here is a look at what you get with the H1. Looks like the unit itself, power supply, remote control and some sort of adapter/charging cable. I'm assuming the user manual will be a download. Looks pretty slick.

HOW DOES THE XGIMI H1 STACK UP...

Here is a little image from the INDIEGOGO site with some specs...

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT...

I'm lucky enough to own a 4K UHD TV.  It's no a new fangled one with HDR so you can feel sorry for me! But then you can tut under your breath at me too because I'm one of the few out there who loves 3D movies at home. I honestly can't see why so many people have a problem with wearing a pair of lightweight glasses to get depth in a movie, but each to their own. Yesterday I got STAR WARS: FORCE AWAKENS - COLLECTOR'S EDITION 3D.  On my 4K TV and played on the new XBOX ONE S it looks amazing with great depth.

Why am I telling you this? Well, this is probably the movie I'm looking forward to watching on the XGIMI H1 the most (well this and Titanic). It was made for the big screen and with the XGIMI H1 being a 3D capable bright projector and if the INDIEGOGO campaign hits the $600,000 mark all backers will get 2 pairs of 3D DLP link glasses.
